Schaumburg

A world-famous shopping area, two major expressways, dozens of soaring office towers and hundreds of high-tech businesses—that’s the Schaumburg that makes headlines as the corporate and commercial center of the Chicago area.

But there’s another side of Schaumburg that you don’t see as you whiz by on the interstate or browse the shops at Woodfield Mall. Comfortable homes on quiet streets, excellent schools and plentiful parks, pristine nature preserves and a variety of art and entertainment opportunities — these are the things that combine to provide the outstanding quality of life that is Schaumburg’s best-kept secret.

Public Amenities

Schaumburg’s award-winning Park District includes innovative facilities geared to every interest. A Polynesian themed water park keeps local kids cool in the summer, but the fun doesn’t stop come winter, thanks to The Water Works Indoor Water Park. The Sport Center’s 110,000 square feet provides space for basketball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics and more, while the Community Recreation Center provides state-of-the-art fitness equipment, racquetball courts and an indoor track.

Schaumburg Golf Club, rated 4 stars by Golf Magazine, provides a country club setting at public course prices, with specialized instruction offered by the onsite golf Academy. The Park District also operates Walnut Greens, a 9-hole, par-3 course that’s perfect for beginners.

Prairie Center for the Arts features an art gallery for local and regional art shows, plus a performance space with a full schedule of music and theater, including nationally known acts. Youth programs include classes in orchestra, theatre, film and dance.

Families love Schaumburg’s professional baseball team, the Flyers. Affordable prices and frequent promotions are a big part of the team’s popularity.

Housing Stock

Schaumburg’s incredible growth started in the 60s and 70s, following a comprehensive plan adopted in 1961. When Woodfield Mall opened in 1971 as the largest shopping center in America, the once sleepy town was officially on the map.

Developers flocked to the area, and the population had grown to 68,000 by 1990 when growth began to slow as builders ran out of land.

Because of this history, the majority of Schaumburg’s single-family homes were built between 1960 and 1990. They are well maintained and many have been modernized, with prices currently ranging up to $700,000 for larger homes, although the median price is around $200,000. Some newer, more elaborate homes are priced at $1 million and above.

Schaumburg also has townhomes and condominiums in every price range, from under $100,000 to over $500,000.

Transportation

Thanks to the incredible shopping and dining options, as well as the proliferation of high-rise office buildings and corporate headquarters, more people commute into Schaumburg than out. But for those who must leave, the town’s location at the intersection of I-90 and I-290 make it easy. The 30-mile trip to Chicago can be made in around 45 minutes. Business and leisure travelers appreciate to 10-minute drive to O’Hare Airport.

Metra trains are available from nearby Palatine.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

Woodfield Mall. When it comes to shopping, that pretty much says it all. Or does it? Schaumburg is also home to one of only two Ikea stores in Illinois, and there’s still more shopping at dozens of smaller malls in the area, including the Streets of Woodfield and Town Square, which is owned by the village and includes the public library as well as shops and restaurants.

Even non-shoppers will find something to love in the Woodfield area—a fabulous selection of restaurants and watering holes, some with live music, a 20-screen movie theater, GameWorks interactive play space, and the wildly popular Legoland Discovery Center.

Schools

The award-winning schools of Elementary District #54 serve most of Schaumburg’s younger students, while high schoolers attend James B. Conant or one of the other schools of District 211.
